Mothers, Children, and Eating: Past, Present, and Future

Mothers have always had a significant role in feeding their children. The “when” and the “what” to eat are first questions, and then the attitudes and perceptions of healthy foods often underlie the “when” and the “what.” Boutelle et al

Associations between maternal concern for healthful eating and maternal eating behaviors, home food availability, and adolescent eating behaviors.
reported their findings concerning the relationships between maternal concern for healthful eating and actual intake and home food environment. Analyzing data from 714 mother–adolescent pairs, they found a positive association between maternal concern for healthful eating and their own fruit and vegetable intake as well as frequency of serving fruits and vegetables at home. Surprisingly to me, the mothers' report of healthful concern was not related to adolescent behavior. This study was part of the Project Eating Among Teens (Project EAT), for which JNEB has published many findings through the years.
